remember how somebody asked me a couple of weeks ago, if there’s a Vaganova diet? i said no, but actually i new the answer back then (no, i didn’t google later, i really did know about it). it’s actually a pretty popular and famous diet here in Russia. it’s not called “A Vaganova Diet” or smth,…

I read that Lopatkina often just eats kefir and grapes or something

Some quotes from Lopatkina on food & eating:

I’ve never had the usual problems of dieting as a dancer. Ever since that time I’ve been able to eat enormous amounts - even of typical Russian food - and stay thin.

- How Do I Look, The Independent (2001)

"I get up rather late, between 9am and 10am. I am an owl, as we say in Russia. But rehearsals don’t start until 11. Since I gave birth to Masha, she acts as my alarm clock. I feed her first. Normally I’m very short of time in the morning, so I won’t eat breakfast, just some grapefruit juice or a glass of tea. If I’m not rushing off I’ll have oat or buckwheat porridge.

After break I’ll have one more rehearsal or sometimes I’ll help teach the younger dancers. Lunch will often become dinner. My favourite place to eat is Staraya Derevnya, a little cafe just round the corner from the Kirov. If I want something more expensive I’ll go to Count Surovov, just off Nevsky Prospekt. Although I am Russian, I spent the first 10 years of my life in the Ukraine, and no one can cook borscht like the Ukrainians.

My diet is not that strict. Ballet should not be like a sport, and the spiritual condition of a ballerina is as important as her physique. I never try to dance just with my body, but with my soul and my heart.

Whether I’m performing or not, I never go to bed before 1am or 2am. Before I go to bed I’ll have Russian kefir, or yoghurt, with a biscuit. If I’ve been performing, I’m so exhausted I don’t want to eat, and I’ll go to sleep as soon as I lie down.”
